Student Organizations

The Management Department serves as host to several national student organizations. Membership in these organizations provides students with the opportunity to improve their scholarship and leadership abilities.

Alpha Kappa Psi

Alpha Kappa Psi is a professional fraternity for students majoring in business administration or economics. To be eligible for membership in the fraternity, a student must be a first semester sophomore or above, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

Alpha Kappa Psi is the oldest business fraternity for students in the College of Business Administration. The KSU chapter, Alpha Omega, was established in the 1920's. The goals of AKPsi are to improve students' scholarship, leadership, and citizenship. Regarding scholarship, the Alpha Omega chapter attracts many of the top students in the College. The average GPA of the chapter generally exceeds that of the College. The chapter also brings in guest speakers from industry to talk about success on the job and information about career opportunities.

The chapter also offers students opportunities to improve and utilize their leadership skills through chairing committees, planning and implementing fundraising projects, and serving as officers.

Finally, the chapter focuses on involving students in the university and local community by offering opportunities in community service. For the past 5 years, the chapter has been responsible for trash cleanup on Interstate 70 in the State's Adopt-a-Highway program. Other community projects have involved the local United Way and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Future Female Executives at KSU

Female Executives is a member of the network of National Association for Female Executives, NAFE. FFE is NAFE’s first collegiate chapter! NAFE currently has 200,000 members worldwide and more than 200 local chapters and is the largest organization for professional women in the country.
The local member network has monthly speakers addressing issues such as networking, resume building, interviewing skills and sexual harassment in the workplace. Annually, the chapter organizes a one-day workshop, which includes topics that are of interest to student members. Its main focus is to prepare K-State students for their upcoming careers. Membership is open to all students in all majors campus wide, but currently most are women undergraduate business majors.

Management Information Systems Club

The MIS Club is composed of students enrolled in or interested in the MIS degree track and others interested in management of information systems and computer technology. The mission of the MIS Club is to provide a solid foundation for CBA students beyond the classroom by encouraging professional development and increasing exposure to the Management Information System industry.
The club's activities are planned and organized by its members. Each member is encouraged to serve on a club committee facilitating a part of the organization. Members participate in local meetings, tours of businesses in the MIS industry, tutoring for the MIS classes, a fall trip to COMDEX convention in Las Vegas, fund raising activities, and interaction with industry and corporate representatives during informational and recruiting meetings. The club also offers short term technology consulting and web site design.

For more information on the MIS Club, contact Mr. Greg Smith (advisor) in Calvin 1B, 785-532-4356 or email to .

Operations Management Club

Operations Management Club is a student group affiliated with both the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Council of Logistics Management (CLM). The club is composed of management majors and others with an interest in operations management, project management, and supply chain management. The mission of the club is to provide students with an opportunity to get beyond pure classroom learning and to interact with practicing managers.

Students are in complete control of all club activities. Activities include: bringing in guest speakers, touring local and regional business to learn about their operations, and attending the meetings of professional organizations such as CLM and PMI. Through these activities students not only learn more about operations management and related topics, they also get to interact with the larger business community in ways that may further their careers.

Society For Human Resource Management

This is a student chapter of a larger professional organization for human resources (HR) management professions. This organization is jointly sponsored by the College of Business and the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Department at KSU. For a yearly membership fee of $40 you get a monthly newsletter and HRMagazine. These publications keep you informed on current HR events (e.g., who is getting sued, new proposed legislation, etc.), examples of actual company practices, and HR job openings. Most semesters this organization will have one or two outside speakers and a company tour. For example, last year students toured the Pizza Hut Corporate Headquarters (including free pizza) and had a consultant from Andersen Consulting speak on campus. There is also a "shadow" program that links you with an HR professional. You get to "shadow" him or her for a day on the job. These activities and publications help you link up with possible internship opportunities, network for possible full-time employment opportunities, and learn about national SHRM professional activities and monthly meetings in various other cities (e.g., Topeka and Kansas City). This is a fun organization that will help you supplement your course work and get an edge in the job market.

For more information on the Society for Human Resource Management Club, contact the Management Department in Calvin 101D, 785-532-6296.

Students in Free Enterprise

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a not-for-profit organization supported by individuals, foundations, and corporations whose mission is to build collegiate SIFE Teams who teach free enterprise in order to better individuals, communities, and countries. SIFE’s purpose is accomplished through the SIFE Team’s outreach projects where students and faculty involve the community in the free enterprise system, providing the students with an opportunity to teach others what they have learned.
