STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Ryan Peitzmeier, a senior in Management, was kind enough to sit down with us and share his experiences about owning his own business.
Name of Business: TopJobz inc. Medical Search Associates
Briefly describe your business and its operations: We are a nationwide clinically-oriented healthcare search firm. We place healthcare professionals that work directly with patients inside of hospitals. It is a lot of "cold call" recruiting and matching the right candidate with the right facility.
Why did you choose this type of business? I actually kind of fell into it. I did an internship with someone who had done it for years and felt this would be right for me. We have been working together for almost a year and a half.
What were the major obstacles in getting your business started? Finding the time and dedication. A lot of personal desires have to be put on the back end so that you can stay focused and grow in the right direction.
What are your goals/aspirations with this business? To continue positive growth by hiring more and more college students that have the desire to be successful. I would also love to be one of leading healthcare search firms in the country.
Did you have any previous experience working in this area? Not in healthcare, but I have been in recruitment and sales since high school. It was the right transition for me in becoming more professional.
What are your thoughts on the future for your business (expansion, growth, etc.)? We started out as 2 employees and hopefully by the end of 2006 will be up to a total of 10. Hopefully we are large enough that we can begin expanding and opening up satellite offices in other parts of the country. That is a very big long term goal. Eventually, we will have offices across the country and become one of the largest recruitment firms in the country not just in healthcare but in other professional fields as well.
How many hours does your business require of you per week? 50 to 70 minimum
How many hours of classes are you enrolled in? This spring is my last semester and I am only in 9 hours however I have been a full time student the previous 3 semesters.
What is your expected graduation date? May 2006
Is there a class in particular that you found especially valuable in starting your business? Entrepreneurship and small business consulting.
Are you going to continue with this business after graduation? If not, what do you plan? I am going to do this business for as long as possible.
Is there any additional advice or comments that you would like to pass on to other students considering similar undertakings? Self motivation is key; without it, nobody can make a small business work. Also, do what makes you happy, not what other people think is best for you. |

27th ANNUAL TELEFUND JANUARY 22-26
The 27th Annual Telefund Telethon for the College of Business occurred January 22-26. Over 120 business students received cash, food, clothing and other prizes while contacting K-State alums for donations to the CBA Scholarship Fund. Early results indicate that nearly $164,000 was raised for the College of Business during the telethon. There will be one more chance for students to assist with Telefund this year as February 22 has been added as an additional chance to collect donations for your scholarships. If you would like to volunteer to call again or for the very first time, sign up in 107 Calvin Hall as seats are limited.

LEADERSHIP STUDIES MINOR
K-State’s interdisciplinary minor in Leadership Studies was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents on March 3, 1997.
The minor is designed to complement your academic major while providing a formal and structured learning experience as part of the total leadership development process.
The minor combines a theoretical focus with an emphasis on personal leadership development and practical experiences.
The discipline of Leadership Studies as it is taught at K-State is based on a broad definition of what constitutes leadership, best articulated by Joseph C. Rost (1991):
"Leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes."
Another important piece that drives our purpose is our mission statement.
"Developing knowledgeable, ethical, caring, inclusive leaders for a diverse and changing world."
If you are interested or if you have questions concerning the leadership studies minor, please schedule an appointment to meet with your advisor.

Hello CBA Students!
My name is Cheryl Hackley and I am the new office manager for CBA Student Services. I arrived new to K-State and Manhattan the later part of October and experienced my first exposure to the whirlwind activities of spring enrollment and December graduation before the holiday break. What an exciting time to meet some of CBA’s great students. Now back from the holiday break, I’m ready and excited to welcome back those of you returning as well as freshman and transfer students to Kansas State and the College of Business Administration.
Born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, I received my bachelors degree from Wichita State University and have an extensive work background in many diversified environments including two higher learning institutions. In my downtime, I enjoy browsing through interior design literature, touring design homes, visiting small community towns, and trying my hand at those “crafty and home improvement” ideas.
Since arriving I have been evaluating ways to enhance services to our students and have built a great team of student workers ready to assist our students at the front desk. From March 6 through April 28 we will have evening advising sessions available on Monday and Tuesday evenings, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Advising will also be available during the lunch hour of 12:00-1:00 during this time.
Once again, welcome back! Please stop and say hi when you come in. Each and every one of you is important to us. Have a great semester!

Open House - College of Business
April 8th marks another exciting open house for the College of Business Administration! We will again follow along with the All-University theme of Las Vegas. Of course there will be exciting games and prizes, but our main focus will lie on promoting the student programs, activities, and academics of our college. These include many of the student clubs such as Study Abroad Advocates, Student Finance Association, and Beta Alpha Psi. Presentations from each academic department will be here as well, highlighting opportunities in each business track and exciting student projects. Be sure to stop by Calvin Hall on Saturday, April 8, 2006, to check out what’s going on in the College of Business!!

This is the first time the SAA have offered OPEN MEETINGS to those who are interested in studying abroad. We also hosted several socials including one at the beginning of the semester to welcome this year’s international exchange students. Our next meeting will be announced over the CBA listserv.
"Studying abroad is one of the best things I have done in college. I had the opportunity to learn so much about myself and other countries and cultures. I will be able to apply what have learned to my professional experience. I would recommend it to anyone!" -Emilee Wallace, SAA President, Studied abroad in the UK.
"Studying abroad has literally meant the world to me. On my journeys I have made friends and memories that will last a lifetime."

Mission
The mission of the CBA honors program is to provide select undergraduate students with enhanced educational opportunities that emphasize scholarship, critical thinking and intellectual curiosity in order to develop their leadership potential.

Cats For Cans
In October, Business Ambassadors participated in Cats-for-Cans to benefit the Flint Hills Breadbasket. Thirty Ambassadors and over 75 Business Orientation students participated in the event by passing out flyers and collecting canned items from 12 different neighborhoods and hundreds of homes in the Manhattan area.
Business Ambassadors participate in volunteer activities in the community twice a year (once each in the fall and the spring). Cats-for-Cans has been the traditional fall volunteer activity for the Ambassadors for many years. However, this year was the first year that Business Orientation students were given the opportunity to join in. The student turnout was phenomenal and allowed Cats For Cans to visit additional neighborhoods to benefit families around Manhattan. The Ambassadors and Orientation students had a great time serving the community and look forward to doing it again in the spring! |
CAP Meeting
The next CAP meeting will be held March 8th. CAP members will be observing a lecture of Business Orientation and fielding a question/answer segment with students.
