Who are the Academic Advisors and how do I know which one
I am assigned to?
If you are unsure who your CBA Academic Advisor is, log on to KATS. Once
you are logged in click on General Information. Your assigned
Academic Advisor should be listed under Enrollment. If you are not
yet in the College of Business Administration, an Academic Advisor
will be assigned to you once you have gone through a change of curriculum
orientation.
How can I contact my Academic Advisor?
General questions can be directed to the CBA Student Services office
(107 Calvin Hall) 785-532-6180. Try using your resources
(FAQ’s, CBA Student Handbook, University Undergraduate Catalog,
CBA website, K-State website, K-State Online- CBA Advising site)
to help answer your questions. Reminder, the Academic
Advisors do not advise via e-mail. Complicated questions
require an appointment with your Academic Advisor. (ie. What
classes should I take?) There are three options available
in order to schedule an appointment with your assigned Academic
Advisor: 1) Calling the CBA Student Services office at 785-532-6180;
2) In person at the CBA Student Services office (107 Calvin Hall);
3) logging onto STAR (www.cba.ksu.edu/star). Emailing
your Academic Advisor should be considered only when out of the
area (ie. Study Abroad, Distance Education, summer).
Can I make a Same Day Appointment?
You may call the CBA Student Services office (532-6180) or stop by
(107 Calvin Hall) to make a SAME DAY appointment with your Academic
Advisor (only on specified days and times). Same
Day Appointment times are Thursdays and Fridays from 1:20 to 4:20
pm. Note: times are subject to change.
What’s the role of my Academic Advisor?
Your Academic Advisor is there to assist you with course selection
and program planning. Their primary responsibility is to
help you meet academic and GPA requirements. They will also
help with any other technical aspects of academic programs such
as completing the appropriate paperwork for degree track entry,
course substitutions, study abroad, transfer credit approval, and
application for graduation. Your Academic Advisor is also
a good source for additional campus service referrals.
Do I have to consult with my Academic Advisor before Enrolling?
It is highly recommended that students see their CBA Academic Advisor
before enrolling to make sure they are on the right track, and
taking the correct courses they need in order to graduate. However,
students can choose to “waive their right to be advised” with
their assigned Academic Advisor. The steps are to log into
STAR (www.cba.ksu.edu/star),
sign in, and complete the online waiver form. The waivers
will be processed at 12 pm and 4 pm each day during the enrollment
periods.
What’s the role of my Faculty Mentor?
Your assigned Faculty Mentor will be assigned to you when you are
accepted in to a CBA major. Your is an excellent resource
for assistance in decision making regarding internship opportunities,
career plans and objectives, and professional development in your
chosen area of study. Your
faculty mentor is also there to share professional experience and
serve as a sounding board for your thoughts and opinions. With
your faculty mentor you can develop a meaningful and lasting relationship
both professionally and personally. Please check with the
CBA Student Services office (107 Calvin Hall) 785-532-6180 if you
are unsure of your assigned faculty mentor.
What is STAR?
STAR is a student tracking and reporting system. It enables only
current College of Business Administration students to make their
own advising appointments and sign waivers of advising online. To
access STAR, log in to www.cba.ksu.edu/star. The
first time you log in your User Name and Password both will be your
ID number (social security number for most). Note: Please
try entering your SSN with and without dashes if you encounter problems. You
can then change your User Name and Password by clicking on My Profile. When
you come to your advising appointment be sure to bring your student
ID; you will need it to sign in and sign out at the designated computer
station.
What is BAPP?
BAPP stands for the Business Administration Pre-Professional Program. When
you begin your journey as a College of Business Administration student,
you are enrolled in the Business Administration Pre-Professional
Program. BAPP is designed as a non-degree program consisting
of 63 hours of general foundation and prerequisite courses. Once
you declare and are accepted into your degree track you will be removed
from the BAPP program.
How can I learn about majors and careers?
To learn more about careers and majors in general the Academic and
Career Information Center (ACIC) is a great resource. ACIC,
located in 14 Holton Hall, is designed to assist you in choosing
or changing a major and/or career goal and planning your educational
path. If you want to learn about different majors and careers
in the College of Business Administration you should stop by the
CBA Student Service office (107 Calvin Hall). You may wish
to sit in on a Change of Curriculum orientation which is held once
a week on Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 5 pm. The Change
of Curriculum orientation is good option to learn about the different
majors and an opportunity to ask questions to an Academic Advisor
without formally changing your major or college.
When and how can I declare my major?
Any College of Business Administration student can declare their
major once they have completed at least 45 credit hours of BAPP
requirements. A degree track must be
declared by 60 credit hours. To declare your major, stop
by CBA Student Services (107 Calvin Hall) and fill out an Application
to Degree Track form or go to http://www.cba.k-state.edu/departments/stuserv/forms/degree.pdf and
fill one out online. Please bring the completed form into

completed. Keep in mind there are GPA requirements to enter
each major. Students are also assigned a Faculty Mentor
as well as their assigned Academic Advisor once they are accepted
into one of the majors.

dual majors or minors outside of the CBA.
What’s a Certificate of International Business (CIB)?
A Certificate of International Business (CIB) will be awarded upon
graduation to students who achieve a superior level of expertise
in international aspects of business. Consultation with your
Academic Advisor is highly recommended. The certificate will
be noted on your transcript. CIB requirements are available
in CBA Student Services (107 Calvin Hall), listed in your CBA Student
Handbook, and also posted at http://www.cba.k-state.edu/departments/stuserv/CIB.htm.
I am thinking about Changing Into the College of Business
Administration. What do I do?
In order to change into the College of Business, certain GPA requirements
must be met. Go to the following website to see the GPA requirements
and the procedure for changing into the college:
http://www.cba.k-state.edu/departments/prospective/currchange.htm. Also,
if you want to know the courses you have left to complete in order to meet
all of the business requirements, log onto KATS and run a Change of Curriculum
DARS report. The report will display the courses that will be accepted
and the courses left to take.
I am thinking about Changing Out of the College of Business
Administration. What do I do?
Come by CBA Student Services (Calvin 107) and fill out a Change of
Curriculum form. The front desk staff will give you directions
on the steps required and where to take your form after completing
it. Also, if you want to know the courses you have left to
complete in order to meet all of the requirements for a different
major or college, log onto KATS and run a “I’m Considering
a Change of Curriculum” DARS report. The report will
display the courses that will be accepted and the courses left to
take.
I’m thinking about Studying Abroad, what should I
do?
Start by talking with your Academic Advisor. Fill out a Study
Abroad Interest Sheet in CBA Student Services (107 Calvin Hall). Start
planning early! Interested students need to start the planning
process well in advance. Deadlines for many of the exchange
programs are due as early as 6 months in advance, including application
for summer programs. Students must validate course work they
wish to complete at the foreign university before they leave
to ensure that classes will transfer back to K-State and be applicable
to their major. For more information on studying abroad visit
the Office of International Programs office (301 Fairchild Hall)
or the OIP website at http://www.k-state.edu/oip/.
Where can I find information about Internships?
Information on available internships can be obtained from Career
and Employment Services (CES), College of Business Administration
departments, faculty, or direct personal contact with businesses. To
receive Unrestricted Elective credit for internships, consult CES
office (101 Holtz Hall) or website at http://www.k-state.edu/ces/.

your CBA Student Handbook or at http://www.cba.k-state.edu/departments/prospective/stuorg.htm.
I’m thinking about taking courses from a community
college or another university, how do I know if they’ll Transfer?
We encourage all students who are planning on transferring classes
to K-State to visit the Admission’s office course equivalency
website at http://www.k-state.edu/admit/tran_info.html to
make sure the class will transfer. After you complete the
class make sure to have your transcripts from the admissions office
of your transfer school sent directly to the Admissions office at
K-State. Grades do not transfer, only credits. It is
important to remember that just because a course transfers to the
University doesn’t mean that it will fulfill a requirement
in your degree track. To verify if a course will fulfill a
requirement in your degree track make sure to meet with your Academic
Advisor. Please note that only up to half (63) of the hours
required for the B.S. in Business Administration degree (126) can
be taken at a two-year college.
Do I have to complete all of the Prerequisites of a course
before taking the course?
Yes, all prerequisites must be met before taking a course. If
you enroll in a class without meeting all prerequisites you may be
administratively dropped from the class. Please see your CBA
handbook or K-State Undergraduate catalog for prerequisites.
I’m trying to get into a Business class but it’s
Closed what should I do?
Many students are faced with this situation. The best thing
to do if a business class is closed is to waitlist the class. This
option will be given to you when you attempt to enroll in a closed
class. If it’s a management, finance, or accounting class do not attend
the first day of the class if you are not enrolled in the class and
you have not received permission to add the section. Students
will be notified by the department via KSU e-mail prior to the start
of the semester or within the first week of classes if they may move
from “Wait List” to “Permission to Add” status. Make
sure to check your email regularly if you are on the Wait List. You
should process your enrollment immediately upon receiving the e-mail. For Marketing classes,
go to class on the first day and ask the instructor for permission
to add or contact the departmental Administrative Assistant. If
you find that you can’t get into a class do not panic!! Your
Academic Advisor can be of great assistance in helping you look at
your other options.
Can I receive a “D” in Business courses?
The College of Business Administration requires a passing grade in
all courses; a “D” is considered passing. Accounting
and MIS majors have additional requirements. Accounting
majors must maintain at least a 2.5 on All Accounting courses. MIS
majors must maintain at least a C in All MIS courses in order to
continue in the major and graduate. In order to graduate
in any Business major your K-State cumulative GPA must be at least
a 2.0. Also if your GPA falls below the minimum GPA requirement
for your specified hours completed you may risk being on academic
warning or academic dismissal from the College of Business Administration
or the University.
If I Retake a course will it replace my previous grade?
If a course is retaken, the original grade is noted as a Retake and
removed from the grade point average. Although there is no
limit to the number of times a course may be retaken, a student
may retake a course with subsequent removal of the prior grade
from the calculation of the grade point average only ONCE for
each course, and for a total of FIVE courses during the
student’s academic career at K-State. For more information
visit the undergraduate catalog at http://courses.k-state.edu/catalog/undergraduate/enrollment/retake.html.
How can I calculate my semester Grade Point Average(GPA)?
To calculate your GPA, divide the number of grade points by the hours of work attempted
Key: A = 4 points, B = 3 points, C = 2 points, D = 1 point, F = 0 points

to adding or dropping classes, but not required. No CBA Academic
Advisor’s signature required for adding or dropping a course. See
the academic calendar for dates and eligibility. The academic
calendar details all activities at K-State that involve academic
