K-STATE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION RECOGNIZES FACULTY MEMBER FOR TEACHING, STUDENT SERVICES STAFF MEMBER FOR ADVISING

MANHATTAN -- An instructor of accounting and an academic adviser in Kansas State University's College of Business Administration are being recognized for their outstanding work.

Monica Woods, an accounting instructor, is the recipient of the college's 2008 Ralph Reitz Outstanding Teaching Award. Emily Brueseke, academic adviser in the college's office of student services, is receiving the 2008 Kansas State Bank Outstanding Advising Award.

Woods and Brueseke will be recognized by Yar M. Ebadi, dean of the College of Business Administration, at the college's commencement ceremony Saturday, May 17.

"As dean, it is very gratifying to know that we have faculty members who are committed to excellence," Ebadi said. "Monica Woods has developed a very creative teaching style that engages her students in the learning process. Her innovative approach captures the attention of her students and helps them understand how to take theoretical concepts and make practical application."

Woods earned the teaching award because of the high quality of her teaching and the care and concern that she shows her students, Ebadi said. She is an Ernst and Young Teaching Fellow and received the department of accounting's BKD Teaching Excellence Award in spring 2007.

Her areas of teaching include accounting for business operations and accounting for investing and financing. She is currently the co-adviser for Beta Alpha Psi, a financial information honorary. Woods received her bachelor's degree and master's of accountancy from K-State. She is also a certified internal auditor.

Brueseke was honored because of the personal interest she gives students she is advising in helping them achieve their academic goals. She specializes in advising students in the business pre-professions program and all business degree tracks. She also advises students earning minors in business.

"Emily Brueseke is an outstanding academic adviser. She genuinely cares about her students and makes every effort to demonstrate her concern in very tangible ways," Ebadi said. "Her positive attitude and enthusiasm for her job have enhanced the environment in the office of student services and significantly improved the College of Business Administration's advising services."

Brueseke received her bachelor's degree in biology from Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind., and a master's degree in college student personnel from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Prior to joining K-State, she was a study abroad advisor at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill.

"Ms. Woods and Ms. Brueseke each represent the high quality professionals we have working throughout the college to create the best learning environment possible for our students," Ebadi said.
